Scalp psoriasis treatment is aimed at controlling the flaking and thickening of skin at the scalp region. A number of treatments are available today for treating psoriasis of scalp, some of which are use of topical creams, shampoos, oral medicines and phototherapy.

- Topical therapy is one of the most popular scalp psoriasis treatment and topical medication is widely available in the form of various effective lotions, creams, ointments, gels and shampoos. These topical creams contain corticosteroids, tazarotene, anthralin, calcipotriol/calcipotriene and tars. These medicines are applied directly on the scalp and left there for sometime before rinsing.
- Most common forms of corticosteroids which are used for scalp psoriasis treatment are betamethasone, clobetasol, fluocinolone acetonide and hydrocortisone. Intralesional steroid injections in the scalp are often recommended by doctors in cases of mild psoriasis where only few areas are involved.
- Other medicines which are often employed in scalp psoriasis treatment are Anthralin, Calcipotriol and Tazarotene. One of the major ingredients that are present in most topical scalp psoriasis ointments is Salicylic acid. It gives relief from itching sensation and loosens the scales so that they can flake out.
- A coconut compound ointment is also seen to be very effective in curing scalp psoriasis. The coconut compound contains salicylic acid, coal tar and sulfur. It is applied to the affected area and left overnight. In the morning, it can be washed off with the help of a medicated shampoo. Coal tar shampoos are often used to remove scaling from scalp.
- Make sure to cleanse your scalp with an antimicrobial prescription or an antifungal shampoo in case it is infected by bacteria or fungus.
- Ultraviolet rays are nowadays being used to for scalp psoriasis treatment. Some people are also recommended to shave their heads so that the UV rays can properly reach the scalp. A UV comb is used to administer high intensity UV rays on the head. These rays are known to remove the existing plaques and also to repair the damaged skin. For those who do not go for this therapy should at least expose themselves to sunlight for a while.
Many people these days prefer natural treatments and home remedies for psoriasis since they hardly have any side-effects. Sea salt bath is one of the most popular natural treatments of psoriasis.
It is also recommended to massage the scalp with jojoba oil or aloevera or a mixture of both. In case of irritation or itching, chamomile tea oil, olive oil, neem oil and lavender oil can have a soothing effect.
